In this wiring connection, the phase line (L) is connected to the L 1 screw on thermostat and then leaving the T 2 terminal which is further connected to the single heating element. On the other hand, the neutral (N) is directly connected to the second terminal of heating element.

In simultaneous water heater thermostat wiring, the phase or Hot “L” line is connected to the left terminal L 1 of upper thermostat and second wire is outgoing from T 2 to the heating element. The Neutral “N” is connected to the right terminal of thermostat L 3 and outgoing from L 4 to the heating element.
In non simultaneous water heater thermostat wiring, the Phase or Hot “L” is connected to the left terminal L 1 of upper thermostat and Neutral “N” is connected to the right terminal L 3. Two wires are outgoing from L 4 as neutral to the upper and lower heater elements.
In the electric water heater and thermostat wiring series, we will be showing the continuous i.e. simultaneous wiring of dual heating elements (9000 Watts (each of 4500 Watts) and thermostats for 240V and 230V electric water heater. You may see the previsions post for 240V non simultaneous water heater wiring installation.
In simultaneous wiring, both the water heating elements are operated at the same time while in non simultaneous wiring, only one heating element is operational at a time and second one “ON” when the first one complete the heating job and disconnected from the power supply automatically by thermostat wiring configuration.
An electric water heater's wiring diagram enables someone to completely rewire a water heater even after removing all of the wires and parts. Water heaters contain three basic electrical components: elements, thermostats and a high temperature limit switch. In most cases the limit switch and the thermostat share a plastic housing.
The standard residential electric water heater control circuit consists of a manual reset high limit switch, an upper thermostat, lower thermostat, two heating elements, and wires. When power is initially turned on to the unit, the upper element is energized and heats the water in the upper third of the tank (see figure 1).
